WASAMED
Thematic Network


Wasamed is a thematic network project funded by the European Commission (EC), within the 5th framework program for the international cooperation with Mediterranean countries (INCO-MED), aiming at establishing a platform for effective Mediterranean communication and debate on water saving in agriculture.



Overall objective

The overall objective of WASAMED is to contribute to improve management of limited water resources and sustainable development in the Mediterranean Region.



Specific objectives
  • To improve regional co-ordination of present and future actions in water saving.
  • To establish a Mediterranean-wide convention to strengthen communication and sharing of experience among relevant researchers, decision and policy makers, and end-users
  • To develop water saving research projects and actions that meet with the needs and concerns arising from the different Mediterranean contexts
  • To facilitate access of different stakeholders to an easy-to-use knowledge-base
  • To create a framework and seek consensus to assist regional planning and EU-funding in water resources management for the Mediterranean Region


Structure

The project breaks down into eight interlinked Work Packages (WP):

WASAMED ensures:

  • that previous and current research, EU-funded projects, and experiences of all partners are fully integrated in the debate
  • the most comprehensive participation of the Southern Mediterranean countries and the full consideration of their common social, economic, institutional and environmental interests
  • that guidelines, indicators, conceptual frameworks and recommendations arising from the Network are fully discussed and formulated with the involvement of all the project stakeholders

    • Irrigation System Performance (Tunisia, July 2004)
    • Unconventional Water Use (Egypt, December 2004)
    • Water Use Efficiency and Water Productivity (Jordan, July 2005)
    • Harmonization and Integration in Water Saving (Lebanon, February 2006)
